Afghanistan: Taliban militants kill security force members in attacks in Parwan and Farah provinces May 27

Afghanistan Alerte de sécurité

Taliban militants kill at least 14 security force members in attacks on checkpoints in Parwan province and Farah province on May 27; further militant attacks possible over the near term

TIMEFRAME expected from 28/5/2020, 12h00 until 30/5/2020, 11h59 (Asia/Kabul). COUNTRY/REGION Parwan province, Farah province, Afghanistan

At least seven security force members were killed and another wounded after suspected Taliban militants attacked a checkpoint in Parwan province on Wednesday night (local time), May 27. The attack occurred in Seyagerd district and some sources suggest the casualty figure may have been higher, with at least ten Afghan National Army (ANA) personnel killed. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, although local officials have attributed it to the Taliban.

On the same night, at least seven police officers were killed when members of the Taliban attacked a checkpoint in the village of Rigi on the outskirts of Farah City (Farah province). Three officers were also reportedly taken hostage following the attack. The two incidents come after a 72-hour ceasefire to mark the Eid al-Fitr holiday period ended on Tuesday, May 26.

Similar militant attacks and clashes between militants and security forces are possible in Parwan and Farah provinces over the near term.

Taliban militants launch attacks on government personnel, security forces, and civilians in Afghanistan on a near-daily basis. Such assaults are, in part, intended to undermine the perceived capacity of Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) - and the Afghan government more broadly - to adequately provide security in the wake of the withdrawal of most US-led NATO forces from the country and to gain leverage amid ongoing peace negotiations.

Individuals in Afghanistan are advised to monitor developments, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
