Afghanistan: Journalists targeted in Kabul UVIED attack

Afghanistan Alerte de sécurité

Afghan journalists targeted in UVIED attack in Kabul’s PD4; avoid the area due to risk of secondary attacks

TIMEFRAME expected from 30/5/2020, 12h00 until 1/6/2020, 11h59 (UTC). COUNTRY/REGION Kabul

At least two people were killed on Saturday, May 30, when a minibus belonging to a local television station was targeted in an under-vehicle improvised explosive device (UVIED) attack in Kabul's Police District Four (PD4). A journalist and a driver employed by Khurshid TV were killed in the bombing near Gul-e-Surqh Square and at least six others wounded. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Taliban have repeatedly threatened members of the Afghan press and targeted those seen as critical of the group.

Secondary attacks are possible in the area in the near term.

Afghanistan remains a high-risk operational environment and deployments should only be undertaken with the strictest possible security risk management procedures in place. Members should maintain a low profile and use a vetted security provider that offers close protection and emergency response services. Minimize time spent in the vicinity of checkpoints, security forces, and government buildings, as these are among the primary targets for militant attacks.
