On Saturday, May 30, heavy rain in Dhofar province caused flooding in the city of Salalah, leaving one individual dead and at least one other person missing. Properties were damaged and power and water supplies disrupted, with areas also witnessing a disruption in telephone and internet connections. Authorities sent military police to the city to help clear roads and airlift people cut off by the floods to safety. More than 260mm of rain is reported to have fallen in the area over the last two days. The storm is forecast to affect the area for a further two days, with more than 500mm of rainfall expected in total. However, the weather system is not expected to develop into a tropical storm.
Associated flooding, landslides, and transportation and business disruptions are anticipated, as well as disruptions to power and communications services in the coming days.
Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate continuing disruptions, and not drive through floodwaters. Running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult. Floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
