Suspected armed bandits killed at least 18 people on Sunday, May 31, in villages in the Faskari local government area (Katsina state) and reportedly stole thousands of livestock. Local reports state that the local leader of the village of Sabon Garin in the Batsari local government area was also killed when the group attempted to kidnap him. The group, reportedly to have numbered more than 500, was said to have moved towards other villages in the Batsari local government area following the killing of the Sabon Garin village leader.
Security operations are likely in the area in the near term.
Bandit attacks have become an increasing threat in northwest Nigeria in recent years amid rising communal tensions, with Katsina state having seen repeated outbreaks of such violence. High-profile security operations have previously had little success in reducing violence in the northwest.
Those in Katsina state are advised to monitor developments to the situation and adhere to all directives and advice issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
The security environment in Nigeria remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
