A militant, suspected to be linked to the Islamic State (IS) militant group, attacked a police station and killed a policeman in South Daha (South Kalimantan province) on Monday, June 1. According to media sources, the incident took place at approximately 02:15 (local time) on Monday morning. The assailant reportedly set alight a police car outside the South Daha police station, before attacking officers inside with a bladed weapon. One police officer was killed and another was criticality wounded. Security forces shot the militant as he attempted to attack two other policemen present. Police seized the weapon along with an IS-style flag and a Quran. The suspect died en route to the hospital. Authorities are investigating the incident and the suspected link to the IS.
Further militant attacks are possible over the near term.
Individuals in South Kalimantan province, and Indonesia more generally, are advised to remain vigilant for militant activity and report any suspicious behavior or activity to the authorities.
