At least two people were killed and eight others wounded after an explosion occurred at the Wazir Akbar Khan Mosque in Kabul's Police District 10 (PD10) on Tuesday, June 2. The explosion in the capital's fortified diplomatic zone, which occurred at 19:55 (local time), was believed to have been the result of a body-borne improvised explosive device (BBIED). Reports indicate the imam of the mosque was among the deceased. No group has claimed immediate responsibility for the attack.
A heightened security presence is expected in the Wazir Akbar Khan area in the coming days and further militant attacks are possible in the near term.
Individuals in Kabul are advised to avoid the affected area, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
The security environment in Afghanistan remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
