At least 21 people died in a series of landslides in Assam state on Tuesday, June 2, following heavy rain over the previous few days. The landslides occurred in the districts of Cachar, Hailakandi, and Karimganj in the Barak valley region. At least seven others were also injured in the landslides. Rescue and recovery operations are continuing in the affected areas. Nine people died in Assam in flash floods in the previous week, but floodwaters have been receding since Monday, June 1.
Residual disruptions are possible in affected areas in the coming days.
Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate transportation disruptions, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
