Thousands gather in ongoing anti-racism rallies across multiple cities of Quebec province on June 7; further protests and associated disruptions expected

TIMEFRAME expected from 7/6/2020, 12h00 until 9/6/2020, 11h59 (America/Montreal). COUNTRY/REGION Québec, Montréal, Sherbrooke, Québec City

Event

On Sunday, June 7, thousands of people gathered for anti-racism rallies in multiple cities in Quebec province over the police-related death of George Floyd and the wider Black Lives Matter movement. In Montreal, participants have gathered downtown along Saint-Catherine Street, where local political leaders have addressed the crowd. In Sherbrooke, a large group has assembled at the Place de la Gare, while in Quebec City, thousands have gathered outside the National Assembly. A large number of police officers have been deployed, albeit at a distance from the crowds. Previous rallies on Sunday, May 31, resulted in multiple arrests.

Further protests and unrest are likely in the area in the near term.

Context

George Floyd died while being arrested by Minneapolis police officers on May 25. The four arresting police officers were subsequently fired, and one has since been charged with murder. Black Lives Matter (BLM) supporters gathered on May 26 to denounce the death and actions of the police officers. Clashes ensued between protesters and riot police; with demonstrators throwing bricks and projectiles at police and police property, and police responding with tear gas and rubber bullets as they attempted to disperse the crowds. Protests have since spread to a number of cities across the US, with solidarity protests taking place throughout the world.

Advice

Individuals in Quebec province are advised to monitor developments, avoid all protests as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
