Sudan Alerte de sécurité

Tear gas deployed to disperse protesters in Khartoum denouncing new UN mission for the country on June 10; avoid all protests as a precaution

TIMEFRAME expected from 9/6/2020, 11h00 until 12/6/2020, 10h59 (Africa/Khartoum). COUNTRY/REGION Khartoum

Police have deployed tear gas to disperse demonstrators in Khartoum on Wednesday, June 10. Those gathered are denouncing the recent announcement of the United Nation's (UN) Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan, whose mandate is to support the country's passage to civilian rule. Protesters gathered near the army headquarters in Khartoum. There have been no reports of injuries at this time.

Further unrest is likely in Khartoum over the near term.

Sudan is currently in a three-year transition period whereby power is shared between civilians and a military council, after the long-serving President Omar al-Bashir was ousted amid widespread anti-government protests in 2019.

Individuals in Khartoum are advised to monitor developments, avoid all protests as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
