Brazil Alerte de sécurité

Brazil’s government renews decree allowing deployment of troops to Amazon rainforest for 30 days as of June 10; heightened security presence anticipated in affected areas over the near term

TIMEFRAME expected from 11/6/2020, 12h00 until 10/7/2020, 11h59 (America/Sao_Paulo). COUNTRY/REGION Brazil

Event

On Wednesday, June 10, President Jair Bolsonaro signed a decree extending the deployment of troops to the Amazon rainforest for an additional 30 days. The deployment will largely impact surrounding states and indigenous communities. Affected states include Acre, Amapá, Amazonas, Mato Grosso, Pará, Rondônia, Roraima, Tocantins, and Maranhão. The decree gives military authority over environmental agencies in the Amazon, among other powers.

A heightened security presence in the affected areas is to be anticipated over the near term.

Context

President Bolsonaro sent troops to regions of the Amazon in 2019 following large-scale wildfires. Troops were also deployed last month in order to mount a response to increased deforestation of the Amazon rainforest. Critics of the deployment of troops believe the move allows greater deforestation from illegal loggers and other similar parties.

Advice

Individuals in affected areas are advised to monitor developments to the situation and adhere to instructions issued by the local authorities.
