Nigeria: Airstrikes hit alleged Boko Haram militants in Sambisa Forest (Borno State) June 17

Nigeria Alerte de sécurité

Military claims to have destroyed Boko Haram camp in Sambisa Forest (Borno State) airstrikes on June 17; further security operations likely in medium term

TIMEFRAME expected from 20/6/2020, 12h00 until 22/6/2020, 11h59 (Africa/Lagos). COUNTRY/REGION Borno State, Nigeria, Sambisa Forest

Event

Nigerian military sources claimed to have destroyed a Boko Haram operating base in a series of airstrikes in Borno State's Sambisa Forest on Wednesday, June 17. At least one vehicle and an amount of unspecified equipment were reported to have been destroyed in the strikes on the suspected logistics base in the Yuwe area of the forest. Several alleged Boko Haram fighters were also reported to have been killed in the airstrikes, but officials did not provide an estimate of the number of fatalities.

Further security operations are likely in the area in the medium term.

Context

Despite the significant decline in its operational capabilities since 2018, Boko Haram has maintained a significant presence in the Sambisa Forest and continues to use the area as a base from which to launch attacks in Borno State and the wider region. The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has launched regular airstrikes against suspected militant positions in the forest amid a series of major offensives against the group in recent years, but claims of successful strikes are often unverified and security forces have struggled to seriously degrade Boko Haram's presence.

Advice

Those in Borno state are advised to monitor developments, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Nigeria remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
