Local media sources report that a rocket attack took place in the vicinity of Baghdad International Airport (BGW) on Monday evening (local time), June 22. At least one rocket reportedly struck in or near the Baghdad Diplomatic Support Center (BDSC), with no casualties currently reported.
Similar attacks targeting US facilities are possible in Iraq over the near term.
The recent uptick in attacks against US compounds and interests in Iraq comes against a backdrop of the recent 'strategic dialogue' between the US and Iraq, in which the failure to deliver a timeframe for US withdrawal is likely to provoke Iranian-backed Shia militia groups.
Individuals in Baghdad are advised to closely monitor the situation, avoid the affected area, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments. The security environment in Iraq remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas with proper security protocols in place, other areas should be considered strictly off-limits.
Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to all travel.
