Nigeria Alerte de sécurité

Boko Haram militants kill security personnel in ambush of escorted convoy near Damboa (Borno state) on June 27; security operations likely in near term

TIMEFRAME expected from 29/6/2020, 12h00 until 1/7/2020, 11h59 (Africa/Lagos). COUNTRY/REGION Damboa

Event

At least 11 security forces personnel were killed on Saturday, June 27, when Boko Haram militants ambushed an escorted civilian convoy near the Borno state town of Damboa. The attack reportedly occurred on the outskirts of the village of Komala when militants opened fire on military vehicles escorting the convoy of around 100 civilian trucks on the Maiduguri-Damboa road, prompting a heavy exchange of fire. At least nine soldiers and two Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) militia fighters were killed in the incident but an unknown number of others, including civilians, are believed to remain missing after fleeing the scene of the ambush. Security sources claimed that at least 20 Boko Haram militants were also killed in the incident, but this is yet to be independently verified.

Security operations and further Boko Haram attacks are likely in the area in the near term.

Context

Saturday's ambush occurred on the edge of the Sambisa forest, in an area where Boko Haram militants are known to still operate.

Despite the significant decline in its operational capabilities since 2018, Boko Haram has maintained a significant presence in the Sambisa Forest and continues to use the area as a base from which to launch attacks in Borno State and the wider region. The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has launched regular airstrikes against suspected militant positions in the forest amid a series of major offensives against the group in recent years, but claims of successful strikes are often unverified and security forces have struggled to seriously degrade Boko Haram's presence.

Advice

Those in Borno state are advised to monitor developments, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Nigeria remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
