Nigeria Alerte de sécurité

Suspected Islamist militants kidnap four humanitarian workers and a security guard in Borno state and request ransom June 29; similar incidents possible over the near term

TIMEFRAME expected from 1/7/2020, 12h00 until 3/7/2020, 11h59 (UTC). COUNTRY/REGION Borno State, Nigeria

Event

On Sunday, June 29, suspected Islamic militants released a video appeal involving four kidnapped humanitarian workers and a security guard, requesting the payment of a ransom in order to secure their release. Although the group responsible for the kidnappings has not been identified, both Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) militant groups are known to operate in Borno state, having both previously carried out similar abductions in recent years.

Similar incidents are possible in Borno state over the near term.

Context

Kidnappings are common in Nigeria, especially in northern states, with both Nigerians and foreign nationals being targeted by kidnappers.

Advice

Individuals in Borno state are advised to remain vigilant, vary daily schedules and itineraries, and refrain from sharing personal information with unknown persons to limit the risk of being targeted by potential kidnappers. If attacked, remain calm, do not offer resistance, and adopt a cooperative attitude. Do everything in your power to keep the situation as calm as possible (e.g. accepted offered food, engage in conversation initiated by your captors, avoid all political or potentially inflammatory topics, etc.). The security situation in Nigeria remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
