Nigeria Alerte de sécurité

Militants kill two during attack in Damasak (Borno state) on July 2, UN aid helicopter hit amid attack; further attacks possible over the near term

TIMEFRAME expected from 5/7/2020, 12h00 until 7/7/2020, 11h59 (Africa/Lagos). COUNTRY/REGION Damasak (Borno state), Borno State, Nigeria

Event

Suspected Boko Haram militants attacked Borno state's Damasak on Thursday, July 2, killing at least two civilians and injuring several more. A UN Humanitarian Air Service helicopter was also hit by bullets during the attack; however, no aid workers were on board at the time and all the crew were reported safe. Reports indicate that the helicopter returned to the state capital Maiduguri. The UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Edward Kallon, condemned the attack and called on Nigerian authorities to reinforce the safety and security of all humanitarian workers.

Further attacks and associated security operations are likely in the area in the near term.

Context

The northeastern region of Nigeria (i.e. the states of Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa) is highly susceptible to attacks by Islamist militants, including from Boko Haram and Islamic State-West Africa Province (ISWAP). Though Nigerian military forces have pushed insurgents from much of their previously claimed territory, attacks have been on the rise since June 2017.

Advice

Individuals in Borno state are advised to monitor developments to the situation, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Nigeria remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
