On Sunday, July 5, security forces killed four Maoist militants during an operation in Kandhamal district (Odisha state). The security forces were acting on a tip-off regarding the whereabouts of militants near Tumudibandh when they were fired upon by the militants. In the ensuing gun fight four militants were killed and others wounded before they fled into the forest. Further operations were launched to track down the remaining militants. Weapons and explosive devices were recovered in the operation.
Further security operations and militant activity are possible in Kandhamal district over the near term.
Maoist insurgents (Naxalites) are active in rural/remote areas of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Bihar, and West Bengal states, as well as in the border region between Andra Pradesh and in remote parts of Bihar and West Bengal states. For this reason, restrictions on the movement of foreigners are in place for some rural areas of eastern India.
Individuals in Odisha, particularly those in Kandhamal district, are advised to monitor developments to the situation and remain vigilant for potential militant activity, particularly if planning on traveling to rural areas of the abovementioned states.
