Civil society groups have called for marches to take place in Kananga (Kasai-Central province) and Beni (North Kivu province) on Tuesday, July 7. The marches are being held to denounce the nomination of Ronsard Malonda as the new head of the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI). In Kananga demonstrators will march from Saint-Clement to the governorate building at 10:00 (local time). In Beni participants will march from the Kalinda stadium to the local National CENI office. Associated marches are likely in other major urban centers across the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Further demonstrations are expected in the coming days and unrest is to be anticipated.
Previous protests over the appointment of Malaonda as head of CENI were witnessed in Kinshasa on July 4. During these demonstrations security forces used tear gas to disperse protesters and a number of participants were detained.
Individuals in DRC are advised to monitor developments, anticipate overland disruption in the vicinity of demonstrations, avoid all protests as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
