Armed bandits attacked the Yargamji village of Batsari Local Government Area (Katsina state) on Monday, July 6, killing at least 15 villagers. According to media sources, dozens of attackers arrived on motorcycles at approximately 10:00 (local time) and began sporadically shooting, killing 15 people and wounding several others in the village. Security personal in the area mobilized and were able to repel the attack as the bandits fled the area. Security forces are continuing search operations to locate the assailants.
A heightened security presence is to be expected in the area in the near term.
Bandit attacks have become an increasing threat in northwest Nigeria in recent years amid rising communal tensions, with Katsina state having seen repeated outbreaks of such violence. High-profile security operations have previously had little success in reducing violence in the northwest.
Those in Katsina state are advised to monitor developments to the situation and adhere to all directives and advice issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
The security environment in Nigeria remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
