Several dozen protesters were arrested on Wednesday, July 8, during protests in Kisangani (Northeast Tshopo province) and Goma (North Kivu province). Demonstrators gathered in both provinces to protest against plans to name Ronsard Malonda as the new head of the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI). At least 30 people were arrested in Goma; it is not immediately clear how many were arrested in Kisangani.
Further demonstrations are expected in the coming days and unrest is to be anticipated.
Previous protests over the appointment of Ronsard Malaonda as head of CENI were witnessed in Kinshasa on July 4. During these demonstrations, security forces used tear gas to disperse protesters and a number of participants were detained.
Individuals in the DRC are advised to monitor developments, anticipate overland disruption in the vicinity of demonstrations, avoid all protests as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
