Suspected Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) militants killed at least three people in attacks in the villages of Maliyajamais and Mangazi in Beni territory (North Kivu province) between Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11. The attackers killed at least one person in Maliyajamais on Friday, and reports suggest that two other fatalities occurred in a subsequent attack in Mangazi on Saturday. In addition to the fatalities, the attackers also burned a number of houses, a pharmacy, and a health center. It is currently unclear if government forces have been deployed to the area following the attacks.
Similar attacks are possible in the region over the near term.
The government's limited presence in the DRC's eastern provinces, as well as the presence of numerous armed groups and local self-defense militias, has led to continued insecurity in the region.
Those in North Kivu province are advised to remain vigilant for rebel and militia activity, monitor developments, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
