The rising water level of the Saptakoshi river is putting various settlements in provinces No.1 and No.2 at risk of flooding and destruction as of Monday, July 13.

In Saptari (province No. 2), around 100,000 people of Hanumannagar Kankalini municipality, Rajbiraj municipality, and Tilathi Koiladi rural municipality could be displaced if the river breaks its banks. Some 200 people from Gobargadha village in Ward 13 in Hanumannagar Kankalini have reportedly been relocated to a safer location.

In province No.1, Saptakoshi has already been eroding the embankment in Shrilanka Tapu, located in Barahachhetra of Sunsari district and Belaka of Udayapur district. Elsewhere in province No.1, at least 11 people are missing after a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall swept away eight houses in Sankhuwasabha district on Sunday, July 12.

The possibility of flooding remains high across the southeastern areas of Nepal, in particular in province No. 1 and No. 2.

Further disruptions to travel and infrastructure are to be anticipated in the coming days and adverse weather is to be expected.

Individuals in the affected area are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate transportation disruptions, avoid landslide-prone areas, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to local authorities' instructions.
