Israel Alerte de sécurité

Clashes at anti-lockdown protests in Jerusalem on July 13; avoid all protests

TIMEFRAME expected from 14/7/2020, 12h00 until 16/7/2020, 11h59 (Asia/Jerusalem). COUNTRY/REGION Jerusalem

Protesters gathered in Jerusalem's Romema neighborhood on Monday, July 13, for a third consecutive evening of demonstrations against the government lockdowns enforced in areas of the country amid the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Clashes were reported as the protesters set alight bins and kicked them towards the Border Police forces present. The police reportedly responded and arrested at least 16 protesters. The demonstrations come after lockdowns were imposed on Friday, July 10, in neighbourhoods in five cities across the country, including Ultra-Orthodox enclaves in Jerusalem and Beit Shemesh. Hundreds of people gathered to protest the measures on Saturday, July 11, and Sunday, July 12, which saw clashes with demonstrators throwing projectiles towards police and erecting barricades put in place to enforce the lockdown restrictions. At least 12 other demonstrators were arrested in protests over the weekend.

Further associated protests and associated disruptions are likely in the near term. A heightened security presence is also to be expected.

Those in Israel are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
