The Common Front for Congo (FCC) party has called on supporters to attend a march in Kinshasa on Sunday, July 19, in support of Ronsard Malonda's nomination as head of the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI). FCC supporters will reportedly gather at Liberté Market before marching along Boulevard Lumumba to Boulevard Triomphal.
Previous related protests against Malonda's appointment have resulted in clashes between security forces and protesters. Counter-demonstrations organized by Catholic and citizens' groups are also likely to occur in the capital on July 19.
A heightened security presence is anticipated near all demonstrations sites, as well as associated business and travel disruption.
Multiple protests have been staged by the Lamuka opposition in Kinshasa and numerous provincial towns and cities since Malonda was endorsed by the government as the new head of the CENI on July 2. Many of these demonstrations have been aggressively dispersed by security forces citing the current ban on public gatherings, with fatalities reported at past demonstrations in Kinshasa.
Those in the DRC are advised to monitor developments, anticipate disruptions in the vicinity of demonstrations, avoid all protests as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
