Event

Sudanese security forces detained at least 160 alleged mercenaries on the border with Libya in North Darfur State on Sunday, June 28. A spokesperson for the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) stated that those arrested were heading to Libya to fight, however, it is currently unclear which faction within the country the detainees intended to fight for. A similar event in February led to the arrest of 122 individuals, including eight children accused of being mercenaries.

Context

The UN has stated that armed groups from Darfur have been found to be fighting in Libya for both the internationally-recognized Government of National Accord (GNA) and the Libyan National Army (LNA).

Advice

Individuals in the region are advised to monitor the situation and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities and their home government. The security environment in Sudan remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
