Event

Security forces foiled a militant attack on a military checkpoint in Bir al-Abd (North Sinai province) on Tuesday, July 21. According to media sources, a group of suspected Islamic State (IS) militants used four vehicles, including three vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices (VBIEDs), and attempted to attack a military checkpoint in Rabaa village in Bir al-Abd. Security forces responded and clashes ensued between the forces. Military sources indicate that at least 18 militants were killed, as well as two army personnel and four others wounded.

Further attacks and counter security operations are to be expected in North Sinai over the near term.

Context

Egyptian security forces conduct regular operations due to the presence of militant and terrorist groups operating in the Sinai Peninsula, Nile Delta, and the Western Desert. Egypt frequently conducts raids on suspected militant groups following terrorist attacks. The raids' targets are not typically confirmed by independent reporting and foreign tourists have previously been killed in similar operations.

Advice

Individuals in Egypt are advised to monitor the situation, refrain from traveling to North Sinai province, report suspicious behavior and objects to the authorities, remain vigilant when visiting areas vulnerable to terrorist attacks (e.g. tourist sites, churches, international and government buildings, public transportation hubs, etc.), and anticipate similar security operations over the near term. Adhere to instructions issued by local authorities and your home government.
