DRC: Demonstrations expected in Kinshasa July 23

DR Congo Alerte de sécurité

Demonstrations expected in Kinshasa’s Kasa-Vubu commune on July 23; avoid all protests

TIMEFRAME expected from 22/7/2020, 12h00 until 24/7/2020, 11h59 (Africa/Kinshasa). COUNTRY/REGION Kinshasa

The US Embassy in Kinshasa issued a demonstration alert ahead of expected demonstrations in Kinshasa's Kasa-Vubu commune (Funa district) on Thursday, July 23. The alert states that protesters are expected to gather from 07:00 (local time) at the intersection of Boulevards Lumumba and Sendwe, though protest activity may take place elsewhere. According to media sources, the Common Front for Congo (FCC) group has called upon supporters to march in support of the country's institutions and to denounce the alleged crisis as a result of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak.

Clashes between security forces and protesters are possible. A heightened security presence and associated disruptions are also likely in the vicinity of the demonstrations.

Those in Kinshasa are advised to monitor developments, anticipate disruptions in the vicinity of demonstrations, avoid all protests as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
