At least three demonstrators were wounded on Monday, July 27, as police intervened to disperse a demonstration taking place in Bukavu (South Kivu province). According to media sources, residents of the Nkafu neighbourhood gathered to demand the dismissal of local officials as insecurity in the area continues. Reports suggest that the protesters barricaded the national road leading to Kavumu airport (BKY) causing disruption to traffic for several hours in Bukavu.
Further protests and associated disruptions are possible in the area in the near term.
The government's limited presence in the DRC's eastern provinces, as well as the presence of numerous armed groups and local self-defense militias, has led to continued insecurity in the area.
Those in South Kivu province are advised to remain vigilant for militant activity, monitor developments to the situation, and avoid all associated protests. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
