Two people were killed after a bridge collapsed near Bagrakote (Jalpaiguri district; West Bengal state) on Monday night, July 27, following heavy rainfall. The bridge on the National Highway 31 connects the region with Siliguri (West Bengal state) and Assam state. Following the collapse direct road connectivity between the two areas has been cut off.
The Indian Meteorological Department has warned of further heavy to very heavy rain for West Bengal's Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Darjeeling, Cooch Behar, and Jalpaiguri districts until Friday, July 31. Flooding, landslides, and associated transport and business disruptions are expected in affected areas over the coming days.
Individuals in areas forecast to be affected by the storm system are advised to monitor local weather reports, confirm flight reservations, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate adverse weather and power and transportation disruptions, and remember that running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and never drive through flooded streets; floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
