Myanmar Alerte de sécurité

Over six thousand evacuated by authorities due to flooding in Sagaing region on July 30; associated disruptions expected over the near term

TIMEFRAME expected from 30/7/2020, 12h00 until 2/8/2020, 11h59 (Asia/Rangoon). COUNTRY/REGION Sagaing

As of Thursday, July 30, 6516 residents from 1451 households have been evacuated by local authorities from their homes in Sagaing region after the Ayeyawady River burst its banks following heavy rainfall. Disaster management officials have stated that the flooding may last for some days and that government officials will provide aid and assistance to the flood victims.

Further rainfall and subsequent flooding are forecast over the coming days and associated disruptions to business and travel are likely in affected areas.

Myanmar is prone to flooding during the monsoon season, which runs from April to October. The heavy downpours often cause flooding, particularly in the divisions of Irrawaddy, Mandalay, Sagaing, and Yangon and the states of Kachin, Mon, and Rakhine.

Those in the Sagaing region area are advised to monitor local weather reports in the near term, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate power and transportation disruptions, and avoid wading or driving through floodwater.
