Residents in Sange (South Kivu province), around 24km (15mi) from the Burundian border, gathered to protest on Friday, July 31, after a shooting took place in the area on Thursday, July 30. According to media sources, an Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) soldier, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, opened fire on civilians at a large market in the village at approximately 19:00 (local time). At least 12 people were killed and nine others injured in the incident. Disruptions were reported in Sange from Friday morning as residents blocked roads in protest over the shooting.

A heightened security presence should be anticipated in the area in the near term; further protests and associated disruptions are likely in the near term.


Those in the area are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all protests as a precaution, remain vigilant, and adhere to instructions issued by the local authorities.
