An ongoing protest in the Haut-Katanga province town of Kasumbalesa has reportedly turned violent, on Monday, August 3, with protesters vandalizing property, including the local peace court building. As a result, significant disruption has been reported along the N1 route in the Kasumbalesa area, close to the border with Zambia. The protest is being held by members of the Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS) over the alleged killing of a colleague.
A heightened security presence and localized travel disruptions should be anticipated along the N1 route in the near term.
Those in Kasumbalesa are advised to monitor the situation, avoid the protest, anticipate a heightened security presence, particularly around the peace court, and obey instructions issued by local authorities.
