A suspected Abu Sayyaf militant leader was arrested in Davao City (Davao del Sur region) on Thursday, August 13. The suspect, Abduljihad Susukan, has been charged with 23 murders, five kidnappings, and six attempted murders, according to a police spokesperson. Reports indicate that the assailant handed himself into authorities after being wounded in battle, although this remains unconfirmed. Abduljihad was reportedly flown to the capital Manila on Friday, August 14, where he will face trial. 

Militant attacks and activity are possible in the near term following the arrest of Abduljihad.


Abu Sayyaf is an Islamic State (IS)-affiliated jihadist militant group primarily operating in the southern Philippines. It is notorious for kidnapping people for ransom, especially in southwestern Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago.
