Cameroon Alerte de sécurité

Several areas of Douala inundated by flooding due to heavy rains on August 21; maintain heightened vigilance and follow official directives

TIMEFRAME expected from 21/8/2020, 12h00 until 28/8/2020, 11h59 (Africa/Douala). COUNTRY/REGION Douala

Heavy rain in Douala since the early hours of Friday, August 21, has inundated several areas of the city. Reports indicate that flooding has made some roads inaccessible, and prevented residents from leaving their homes. Affected neighbourhoods include Bepanda Safari, Akwa, New bell, Nkololoun, Bongo Cite Berge, Makepe Missoke, Carriere de tete, Mabanda Bonaberi, Bepanda Bongo, and Bonamoussadi. There were no immediate reports of any casualties as a result of the adverse weather.

Further heavy rainfall and resultant flooding are possible over the coming days, along with associated disruptions to business and transport.

Flooding occurs regularly during Cameroon's April to October rainy season, with the heaviest rains typically occurring in the South during August and September. Floods often have a significant impact in coastal areas and the southern region, and can cause serious travel disruption and infrastructural damage.

Those in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate possible transportation disruptions and power outages, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
