Cameroon Alerte de sécurité

Security forces kill suspected anglophone separatist during operation in Bamenda (Northwest region) on September 6; maintain heightened vigilance

TIMEFRAME expected from 6/9/2020, 12h00 until 8/9/2020, 11h59 (Africa/Douala). COUNTRY/REGION Bamenda

Event

Security forces killed a suspected anglophone separatist during an operation in Bamenda (Northwest region) on Sunday morning, September 6. Reportedly, the operation took place near to Bamenda's City Chemist roundabout in the Ntaseng area, and security forces recovered weapons and ammunition from the scene. The deceased, known as General Fonteh Lucas, or 'Mad Dog', is believed to have been involved with high profile robberies, abductions, and even the killings of civilians and security forces.

Further security operations are likely in the Northwest region over the near term.

Context

Tensions between Cameroon's minority English-speaking community and the national authorities remain high in the Northwest and Southwest regions, where a separatist movement has transformed into a low-level armed insurgency. The situation has deteriorated considerably since September 2017, when secessionists unilaterally proclaimed independence in the region. The United Nations estimates that at least 50,000 Cameroonians have fled the fighting to Nigeria since the beginning of the conflict, with more than 675,000 others believed to have been internally displaced.

Advice

The security environment in the Northwest and Southwest regions remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
