A blast from a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) targeted government troops in the vicinity of Jana Abdalle (Lower Juba region) on Monday, September 7. Reports suggest that a number of foreign advisors were deployed with the Somalian military in the vicinity of the blast; however, this has not been confirmed. Al-Shabaab-affiliated media sources claimed that the group was responsible for the attack and that a number of foreign and Somalian troops were killed. The US Africa Command (AFRICOM) has not commented on the incident.

Further attacks in the area are possible in the near term.

Jana Abdalle was recently captured from Al-Shabaab by Somalian government forces. Since this development, the groups has carried out a series of attacks using improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

Individuals in the area are advised to remain vigilant for militant activity and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Somalia remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
