Farmers representing the Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) on Thursday, September 10, blocked the National Highway 44 at Pipli in the Kurukshetra district of Haryana state to protest recently enacted legislation which farmers say infringes on their businesses. Scuffles between the group and police occurred when the farmers refused to disperse. Police led a baton charge to forcibly remove the protesters from the highway. Dozens of arrests were made during the demonstration.
A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are expected near all protest sites.
