Event

According to local media and witnesses, an Israeli aircraft struck two targets in the Gaza Strip and sirens sounded in communities bordering Gaza in southern Israel warning of rocket fire from the Palestinian territory on Wednesday, September 16. Two targets were reportedly struck on Wednesday, including training base which is led by the Hamas militant group. As of Wednesday morning there have been no reports of casualties on either sides of the border and the Israeli military has not confirmed the airstrikes.

The airstrikes come after at least one rocket fired from the Gaza Strip impacted the city of Ashdod (Southern district) on Tuesday, September 15, as Israel moves to normalize relations with the UAE and Bahrain. At least two people suffered shrapnel injuries after the rocket landed in the street. The Israel Defense Force (IDF) stated that another rocket fired from Gaza had been intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system. Rocket sirens had been triggered in both Ashdod and Ashkelon during the attack.

Further rocket launches from Gaza towards Israel and Israeli retaliatory attacks are possible in the near term.

Context

Hamas has expressed opposition to the Abraham Accords, an agreement which will see Bahrain and the UAE normalize their relations with Israel. Protests against the agreement have been held across Gaza. The deal comes amid heightened tension between Israel and Hamas following a series of balloon bomb attacks and retaliatory airstrikes that have been occurring since August. On September 1, Israel and Hamas agreed to a new ceasefire deal, which allows the resumed delivery of essential goods to the Strip.

Advice

Those in the Gaza Strip and areas of Israel bordering the territory are advised to monitor developments and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
