Nigerian authorities report that at least 42 farmers and local residents were abducted by gunmen on Saturday, September 19, in the Maru Local Government Area (LGA) of Zamfara state. According to local residents, the bandits entered the village of Gobirawar Cali after one of their leaders was detained by local officials and began shooting indiscriminately at residents, who fled to neighboring communities. An unknown number of villagers were able to escape following their capture. State government officials have stated that additional security will be provided in the Maru area and a search for the gunmen is ongoing.
Similar attacks are possible in the area over the near term.
Those in Zamfara state are advised to monitor developments, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
The security environment in Nigeria remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
