Two people were injured after an improvised explosive device (IED) struck a vehicle in Lower Dir district (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province) on Thursday, September 24. The incident occurred in the Barjo Gat area of Maidan. The attack's target was reportedly Malak Khan Badshah, a former commander of the pro-government Amn Lashkar (peace committee). Badash was unhurt in the attack, but his son and a security guard received injuries. Police cordoned off the area and have launched an investigation into the incident. The militant group Tehrik-i-Taliban (TTP) have subsequently claimed responsibility for the attack.
A heightened security presence is expected in the area in the immediate term following the incident and further attacks are possible in the near term.
Individuals in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, and in Pakistan more generally, are advised to remain vigilant at all times and report any suspicious activity to the relevant authorities. Due to a high threat from terrorism, as well as kidnapping and sectarian violence, some Western governments advise their citizens to reconsider travel to the country as foreign nationals, and Westerners, in particular, may be directly targeted.
