On Tuesday, September 29, the Algerian Health Ministry announced that more than 1,000 malaria cases have been recently recorded across five southern provinces. The most affected province is Tamanrasset with approximately 90 percent of all reported cases, along with Adrar, Illizi, Ouargla, and Ghardaia. Despite the recent rise in cases, the Ministry insists that the situation is under control. 

Context

Malaria remains a prevalent risk throughout many areas of the world. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, vomiting, diarrhea, and coughing.

Advice

To minimize the risk of contracting malaria, take measures to protect yourself against mosquito bites (i.e. wear insect repellents, long-sleeved shirts, and pants, etc.). Prophylactics and medications to treat the symptoms of the disease are available.
