Cameroon: Anti-government protesters to gather weekly in urban centers from October 6

Cameroon Alerte de sécurité

Anti-government protesters set to gather in urban centers weekly from October 6; avoid all demonstrations as a precaution

TIMEFRAME expected from 2/10/2020, 12h00 until 31/10/2020, 11h59 (Africa/Douala). COUNTRY/REGION Cameroon

Event

The Cameroon Renaissance Movement (MRC), and other allied political parties and civil society organizations under the coalition of Forces for Change, Peace and Democracy in Cameroon (FCPDC) have called for weekly demonstrations to be held in urban centers every Tuesday starting on Tuesday, October 6. Similar protests held on September 22 resulted in violent clashes between security forces and protesters, and a number of activists and political leaders were detained (including the MRC leader).

A heightened security presence and localized business and transportation disruptions should be anticipated in urban centers on October 6, and weekly afterwards. Security forces are likely to respond to demonstrations using force to disperse those involved, and therefore clashes between security forces and protesters cannot be ruled out.

Context

The MR) party leader, Maurice Kamto, called for gatherings across the country to demand the resignation of the President of Cameroon Paul Biya, who activists claim used fraud to secure a seventh term in office, and for the cancelation of regional elections scheduled for December 6. The Cameroonian government withheld permission for the gatherings. Nonetheless, protests occurred in major urban centers mainly in the north and west of Cameroon on Tuesday, September 22. Police used tear gas and water cannon to disperse protesters and arrested at least 20 activists in Douala. The MRC has claimed that at least one person was killed in clashes between protesters and security forces, and several others were injured. Additionally, police placed Kamto under house arrest for his role in planning the anti-government demonstrations.

Advice

Those in Cameroon are advised to monitor developments, avoid all protests and political gatherings, and adhere to instructions issued by the local authorities
