Yemeni security forces killed three suspected Al-Qaeda militants during a raid in Al Ghaydah (Al Mahrah province) on Friday, October 2. A protracted gunfight broke out as security forces raided a building at around 02:30 (local time). Security forces cordoned off the area and increased security measures. Three militants died in the confrontation and two others surrendered.
Further security operations are possible in the area in the near term.
Islamic militants initially took advantage of the chaos resulting from Yemen's complex internal conflict since 2015. However, more recently the Yemeni government and their coalition allies have made key gains in clearing some territories of militants. Despite this, periodical attacks against security forces and other targets of authority still occur throughout the country.
Due to poor security conditions, many Western governments strongly advise their citizens against all travel to Yemen. Travel to the country should only be considered with extensive security protocols in place. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
