Authorities in Venice have deployed the city's 78 flood barriers on Saturday, October 3, as forecasters warn of impending adverse weather. Forecasters have warned that storms could combine with high tides that risk inundating the city. The tide, driven by strong winds and heavy rains, was expected to reach 130cm (51 inches). This is the first time the multi-billion-dollar system will be deployed, having been tested in July.
Transportation disruption and a heightened emergency personnel presence should be expected in the area over the near term.
Those in Venice are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate transportation disruptions, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, including evacuation orders. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters.
