At least two people have died and seventeen others are reportedly missing after Storm Alex swept across the northwest of the country overnight on Friday, October 2, and into Saturday, October 3. Flooding from the storm has also swept away bridges, made some roads impassable, and isolated communities. A fireman was killed by a falling tree in Aosta Valley region and another person was killed after their car was swept away by the overflowing Siesa River in Piedmont's Bettole district. Officials in Piedmont region reported a record 630 mm (25 in) of rain in 24 hours in Sambughetto and water levels in the River Po rose by 3m (10ft). The regions of Lombardy and Liguria were also affected. Heavy rainfall is forecast to persist in northern regions and move into central Italy on Saturday and into Sunday, October 4, by the Servizio Meteorologico dell'Aeronautica Militare (MeteoAM).

Residual descriptions to businesses, utilities, and transportation are expected in the coming days due to the impact of the storm. Further rains could bring more flooding to northern and central regions.

Advice

Those in affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate transportation disruptions, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, including evacuation orders. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters.
