Italian authorities report on Monday, October 5, that Storm Alex, which swept across the northwest of Italy overnight on Friday has claimed an additional five lives, bringing the death toll to seven with multiple others still missing. Four of the bodies were found along a coastal area near Ventimiglia close to the French border with the fifth discovered slightly inland near a riverbank. Friday's storm also caused several road bridges and houses to be swept away due to flash floods with nearby towns being littered with debris, mud, and overturned cars.
Officials in the Piedmont region recorded a record 630 mm (25 in) of rain in 24 hours in Sambughetto and water levels in the River Po rose by 3m (10ft) during the storm.
Residual descriptions to businesses, utilities, and transportation are expected in the coming days due to the impact of the storm. Further rains could bring more flooding to northern and central regions.
Those in affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate transportation disruptions, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, including evacuation orders. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters.
