Suspected Al-Shabaab militants launched an attack on a Somali National Army (SNA) base in the Jazeera Beach area, around 16km (10 miles) southwest of Mogadishu, on Wednesday, October 7. Local residents reported heavy exchanges of small arms fire in the area at around 13:40 (local time), but there have no confirmed reports on the number of casualties from the attack. Al-Shabaab are reported to have claimed responsibility for the attack and stated that an unspecified number of SNA personnel were killed and equipment destroyed in the assault, although these claims remain unverified.
Further attacks and associated security operations are likely in the Jazeera Beach area in the near term.
Those in the Banadir region are advised to avoid the Jazeera Beach area in the immediate term and monitor developments in their own area of operations.
The security environment in Somalia remains complex and professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
