Philippine security forces arrested suspected Indonesian militant Rezky Fantasya Rullie on the island of Jolo in Sulu province on Saturday, October 10. Reports indicate that army and police personnel carried out a raid on the building he was staying in, arresting him and two women believed to be wives of Abu Sayyaf militants. Security forces also reportedly uncovered improvised explosive device (IED) equipment, including an explosive vest and other components.
Further security operations targeting militants are to be anticipated in the region over the medium term.
Some Western governments advise their citizens against all travel to central and western Mindanao and the Sulu archipelago due to terrorist activity and regular clashes between the military and insurgent groups.
Those in Sulu province are advised to monitor developments, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
