Unidentified gunmen attempted to kidnap a French national in Kribi (South region) on Sunday, October 18. The kidnappee, a CEO for a French company with operations in Cameroon, was reportedly traveling home from a golf course with other businesspeople when the vehicle they were traveling in was stopped between the Kribi Golf Club and the Kribi - Edéa road axis by someone claiming to need assistance with their vehicle at the roadside. Upon stopping and agreeing to help, two armed assailants appeared from the bush at the roadside. The gunmen reportedly focused their attention on the CEO and, after stealing valuables from the travelers, led him away, leaving the other passengers tied up in the vehicle. Passersby reportedly witnessed the incident and reported it to security personnel, and the Rapid Intervention Batallion was deployed following reports of the kidnapping. A search helicopter was also launched to aid the response operations, and hours later the kidnappee was located and freed from the kidnappers. It is not clear whether a gunfight ensued between the kidnappers and security personnel. The main culprit of the incident was allegedly well known to local authorities.
Similar incidents are possible in South region over the near term.
Those in Cameroon are advised to remain vigilant, vary daily schedules and itineraries, and refrain from sharing personal information with unknown persons to limit the risk of being targeted by potential kidnappers. If attacked, remain calm, do not offer resistance, and adopt a cooperative attitude. Do everything in your power to keep the situation as calm as possible (e.g. accepted offered food, engage in conversation initiated by your captors, avoid all political or potentially inflammatory topics, etc.).
The security situation in Cameroon remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
