Nigeria Alerte de sécurité

Unidentified gunmen kill dozens in attack on village in Zamfara State on October 21; further attacks likely

TIMEFRAME expected from 22/10/2020, 12h00 until 23/10/2020, 11h59 (Africa/Lagos). COUNTRY/REGION Zamfara state

On Wednesday, October 21, unidentified gunmen attacked the village of Tugar Kwana in the Talata-Mafara Local Government Area (Zamfara State) killing at least 20 villagers. The gunmen reportedly attacked the village late Wednesday night, with additional security forces being deployed to the area in response. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Further attacks and a heightened security presence are to be expected in the area in the near to medium-term.

In recent years, Zamfara State has faced serious threats from armed groups stealing cattle, kidnapping for ransom, and attacking communities, causing some locals in the state to form vigilante gangs. There has also been an increase in informal mining in the mineral-rich region, attracting outsiders and further fueling instability.

Individuals in Zamfara State are advised to monitor developments to the situation, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments. The security environment in Nigeria remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
