Israel Alerte de sécurité

Anti-Netanyahu protesters march in Tel Aviv on October 22; further protests likely

TIMEFRAME expected from 22/10/2020, 12h00 until 23/10/2020, 11h59 (Asia/Tel_Aviv). COUNTRY/REGION Tel Aviv

Event

Hundreds of people demonstrating against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gathered in Tel Aviv on Thursday, October 22. The protesters reportedly marched through the streets of the city after holding rallies in Rabin Square and Habima Square, to protest over perceived notions that the government is eroding democracy under the guise of fighting the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Despite the protests not having the appropriate permits, police allowed them to go ahead relatively unhindered.

Further protests are likely over the near term. A heightened security presence and associated disruption to transportation and business are likely in the vicinity of protest sites.

Context

Protests have been reported throughout Israel in recent months over the government's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. Anger over the issue has been compounded by pre-existing anti-Netanyahu sentiment, with the Prime Minister facing three criminal cases over alleged corruption.

Advice

Those in Israel are advised to monitor developments, avoid protests as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
